The German public broadcaster ARD has joined Radioplayer, the country’s common platform for online radio.
Radioplayer was launched in September 2014 as an initiative from commercial radio. It makes all the participating stations available on the radioplayer.de website and in apps for smartphones and tablets.
The additon of ARD, which is owned by the public service broadcasters in the German states, means that the number of stations on Radioplayer rises to more than 300. ARD will be part of Radioplayer for at least one year.
The decision by ARD to use Radioplayer as a platform is part of its strategy to replace FM with a combination of DAB+ terrestrial digital radio and internet streaming.
Radioplayer is available as apps for IOS and Android as well as for Android watches and the car systems Android Auto, Car Play and Ford SYNC. An app for Apple Watch was introduced earlier in June and Radioplayer is currently testing a version for Windows smartphones.
