U.S. Radio Revenue Down in 2014

U.S. radio revenue fell 1% in 2014 to 17.5 billion dollars, according to a report from Radio Advertising Bureau.
”Radio held its own in 2014 with radio revenue remaining steady despite an economic climate which saw some businesses tightening their spending in Q4 due to reduced consumer confidence” says RAB’s president and CEO Eric Farber in a press release.

US Copyright Office Wants Performance Royalty for Radio

Terrestrial radio stations in the US are exempt from paying royalty fees for music to copyright owners. But the United States Copyright Office has now endorsed the introduction of a performance royalty for terrestrial radio.
In the study “Copyright in the Music Marketplace”, the US Copyright Office recommends that terrestrial radio stations should pay royalties to publishers and other music rights owners, in line with the rules for satellite and Internet radio. “The exemption of terrestrial radio from royalty obligations harms competing satellite and Internet radio providers who must pay performance fees” the report states.

Chérie FM Relaunches in Belgium

NRJ Group will relaunch its adult contemporary brand Chérie FM in Belgium on February 14.
Chérie FM was broadcast on FM in Belgium in the 90’s, but this time the station will be one of NRJ Group’s 45 internet radio stations on the Belgian market. Distribution will be through the station’s website (www.cheriefm.be), a mobile app and eventually digital television.

All-Time-High for Commercial Radio in Finland

2014 was the best year so far for Finland’scommercial radio, which celebrates its 30-year anniversary in 2015.
Radio advertising grew 9.4% in 2014 to 57.3 million euros, while the total advertising market shrank 2.6%. Radio’sshare of advertising increased from 4.4% to 5%.

UK: Two Applicants for New National Multiplex

The UK media regulator Ofcom announced today that it has received two applications to run a second national, commercial digital radio multiplex from next year.
Ofcom hopes to award the license by summer 2015 and the first new digital stations are expected to be on-air next year.

French Regulator Wants Expansion of Digital Radio

In a new report, France’s broadcasting regulator CSA proposes an expansion of digital terrestrial radio in the country.
Currently, digital radio is on-air in Paris, Marseille and Nice. The four big commercial radio groups RTL, NRJ, Lagardère and Next Radio have opted out of the project, pointing to the additional costs of broadcasting on both analog FM and digital. They have instead focused on developing internet radio. The public service company Radio France has so far failed to secure financing for a partipation. Because of this, all of the current digital licenses are used by local and independent stations.

Indian FM Auctions This Year

The Indian government has finally given the clearance for the first auction in “FM Radio Phase III”, reports Radio and Music.
The first e-auction is expected later this year and will cover 135 licenses in 69 cities. The auctions will continue during the next three years and will include a total of 839 licenses in 294 cities. The estimated revenue from the auctions is 5.5 billion rupees (900 million US dollars).

Christmas Music Lifts US Stations

iHeart Media stations have reached the top of the ratings in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago thanks to their switch to a Christmas music format.
In New York, Lite FM has increased its share of listening from 5.6 to 7.7% – enough to replace CBS Radio’s classic hits station WCBS-FM as the most popular station. Similarly, Los Angeles-based KOST-FM rises from 5.2 to 7.0%, while sister station KIIS loses .4 to 4.9%.

Australia: Macquarie Merges with Fairfax

The two Australian commercial radio groups Macquarie Radio Network and Fairfax Radio will be marged, it was announced on Monday.
Macquarie Radio Network owns the two Sydney stations 2GB (talk) and 2CH (easy listening). Fairfax Radio runs 2UE in Sydney, 3AQ and Magic 1278 in Melbourne, 4BC and 4BH in Brisbane, and 6PR and 96 FM in Perth.
